How to setup your pdf file for output

In the perfect scenario pdf should be 4 color (CYMK) or (RGB) compliant with all required fonts (typefaces) embedded or paths (outlines). All images/pictures should be high resolution (300dpi) and saved as CYMK JPEG or TIFF files. We would prefer Final print ready CMYK pdf files, but you can supply files in the original format ie. Indesign or QuarkXpress but ensure all fonts, links, etc are supplied to us.

All document pages should be set with a 3mm bleed where the design is to be printed to the edge of the sheet and any textual content should not be within 5mm of the edge.

When producing magazines publications etc that have multiple pages when stitching an occurrence known as page creep happens (to explain this, open up a stitched book flat and you will see how the pages move into the center. We will set up creep to match the paperweight etc in the imposition software but please be aware that images that go over a double page spread may not finish as you expect due to page movement on a large publication a page may move by 3mm into the centre of the finished book.

Creating pdf files – The problems that can occur

  • Make sure that the resolution of images is at least 300dpi images that have been pulled from the internet are usually 72dpi screen resolution only
  • Please make sure you embed the fonts in the pdf it will fail on the rip if you don’t
  • Wrong color space assigned
  • Page size – please make sure that the size of the finished pdf is the correct size
  • Incorrect trim or bleed size – if this is wrong and no bleed is allocated the finished job will be incorrect a minimum of 3mm bleed is required.
  • Incorrect colors – make sure that spot colors are correct if you require more than 4 colors alter to four colour process.
    Keylines and cutting forms sometimes have problems with trapping eg knocking out of the final pdf make sure they are set to overprint set as spot colours and call the colour – cutter – we have a setting setup for this to enable overprinting.
  • Too much compression – this will result in poor image quality
  • Transparency issues – If the transparency is not flattened you may not get the result you expect
  • Inconsistency with native file (hairlines, gradients)
  • Incorrect ICC profile – we will advise you or supply you with the correct profiles
  • There are various methods of producing pdf files not all of which are correct
