How to Stop the World Cup Impacting on Your Business
If you are a business leader or business owner, you’ll be worried about the impact of the World Cup on your business productivity and sales.
I know this feeling, as I used to run a 60 person team which loved football and sold to a sector – property investors – that was equally mad about the World Cup, European Cup etc…
The advent of the internet – and the fact that all our sales were either over the internet or a result of internet traffic, meant that I learned early on the effect of a football tournament – basically, your sales will stop for 12 hours before and 12 hours after an England game and sales will be down 35% for first 4 weeks.
Okay, not much you can do about that.
However, you do still have the problem that you have to pay the same rents, employee salaries, taxes, HR obligations and so on and so forth and therefore, June will probably lose you money.
This meant that when we did our annual budgets we’d always down grade June if it had a World Cup or European Cup in it (every other year).
And, sometimes, the tournament would just bring on the summer slow down early.
So, what can you do about this?
Certainly you can’t stop the World Cup. You can of course, hope that England get knocked out early and we get back to business – but you don’t really want that do you?
Alternatively, you can put a bet on England getting to the semi-finals – so that if it happens, your business can earn a big win and pay for the loss of business. Okay, that’s a kind of insurance.
Lastly, you can work with an outsourced freelance team.
You see, an outsourced freelance team works when you have the work – and when it comes to play, well you can all play together without you paying for lost time.
If your freelance team gets into the office late the next day – or leaves early – no worries – not for the freelancer nor for you.
I haven’t enjoyed a football tournament to 10 years – but this year, is going to be different. This year, my business is entirely freelance and that means we can all enjoy it together.
