North West enjoys two year startup boom

Recent research has found new Manchester and Liverpool startups second only to new businesses founded in London.

Companies House data was compiled by YooDooBiz and makes for interesting reading. According to the research, there has been an 80% increase in startup companies in Manchester over the last two years, while Liverpool stands at 77%.

Other cities reporting an increase in new startups include Coventry and Bradford, although the research also claimed that the East Midlands saw a decrease in new businesses opening their doors.

It was also estimated that almost 60,000 new businesses were founded in London during 2010.

After holding our 2010 autumn events in Manchester and Liverpool, the impressive North West stats do not surprise us, but despite a thriving digital and media community, Yorkshire showed a -3% decline in startups between 2008-2010.

It would be interesting to find out how many of the new North West businesses were freelancer ltd companies and digital startups. The figures prove  that the regions freelance and startup community is in excellent health going into 2011.
