Why I hire freelancers, by Jane Harrad-Roberts

The first Brookson Enterprise Freelance Fair event of 2011 takes place in Manchester on February 16th.

We invited one of our sponsors, Jane Harrad-Roberts, MD of Marketing Projects to talk about her work with freelancers ahead of our February and March events.

Jane has hired tens of freelancers in 15 years of business and believes this will start to become the norm for UK businesses.

Q) Jane, why should freelancers feel good about the future?

Markets and skills are becoming so fragmented and difficult to predict. Organisations are being strangled by red tape on hiring and need the flexibility freelancers can offer. We know, because that’s the basis we’ve always worked – we’ve never had the ambition to take out a long lease on a glass and steel, city centre property and fill it with suits. I think our first freelancer was a photographer who we quickly found could do great product shots but not news stories and learnt from those mistakes. One size doesn’t fit all.”

Q) What do you look for in a freelancer?

The first questions we ask a freelancer are – ‘What else have you got on?’ and ‘Will you sign this confidentiality agreement?’

We’ve been burned once or twice on this. I hate it when a freelancer promises they can deliver and you then seem to be less important in their priorities or they promise and claim expertise on something they’ve never delivered before. We buy in experience to save us time and when that doesn’t materialise, we don’t use them again.”

Q) Why do you keep using freelancers?

99% of freelancers are brilliant and bring so much to the table; keen, enthusiastic, always going the extra mile and right there at the forefront of what’s new because their contacts and skills have to be up to date. It’s what keeps us fresh and we love working with them.”

You can meet Jane at our Manchester Freelance Fair at Innospace on 16th February where she will be presenting at our freelance workshop. Tickets are available here.
